The Association of Independently Owned Financial Planners (AIOFP) is the nation’s largest association for financial planning practices that do not have any ownership by financial institutions. These institutions are also know as ‘manufacturers’ or ‘product producers’. The financial services advice market can be divided into two fundamental options to select from when seeking financial advice:

product producers who have in-house advisers or
advisers who are independently owned

Many consumers are confused and want clarity on who they are dealing with when seeking financial advice and guidance. For some inexplicable reason, the disclosure rules for institutionally owned practices, to clearly indicate who they are owned by or licensed to, changed in 2004. This means that they no longer have to disclose who they are owned by on marketing and promotional material.
